The downspout is the part of your gutter system that most homeowners forget about — until water starts pooling beside the foundation. A blocked or misdirected downspout can send thousands of gallons of water directly against your home during a single storm. Here are the most common downspout problems in Cary and what resolves each one.
Clogged downspout elbow
The elbow at the bottom of the downspout — where the vertical run angles toward the wall and discharge — is the most common blockage point. Leaves, pine needles, and roof grit pack into the elbow bend and restrict or completely block flow. The gutter above may be clear, but water still backs up because it cannot exit.
Fix: Mechanical clearing from both ends — working a plumber's snake or high-pressure flush through the elbow until the blockage breaks free. This is included in every Cary Gutter Pros cleaning.
Blockage in the vertical run
In two-story homes, the full vertical run of a downspout can develop a blockage midway if a large debris mass enters from the gutter. Water may trickle out at the bottom while most flow is still blocked.
Fix: Top-down flushing with a garden hose at pressure, or mechanical clearing if the blockage is compacted. Confirmed by observing free flow from the discharge outlet.
Missing or improperly positioned discharge extension
The discharge extension — the horizontal piece at the bottom of the downspout — directs water away from the foundation. Extensions that are missing, disconnected, too short, or pointing toward the house send water directly beside the footing.
Fix: Reconnect or replace the extension and confirm it directs water at least 4–6 feet from the foundation. In some cases, a splash block or buried drain pipe is needed.
Underground drain connection failure
Some Cary homes have downspouts connected to underground drain pipes. When these pipes crack, root-intrude, or clog, water backs up into the downspout and overflows at the gutter. The gutter appears to overflow even though it is clean.
Fix: Camera inspection of the underground run. This requires a separate drain contractor, but identifying the problem early prevents excavation-level repairs later.
Downspout pulling away from the wall
Downspout straps secure the vertical run to the exterior wall. When straps fail, the downspout can separate at a joint and direct water behind siding rather than to the discharge outlet.
Fix: Resecure straps and reseal separated joints. Minor repairs completed during a standard cleaning visit.
When to call immediately
Call for urgent downspout service when you see water actively pooling within 2 feet of your foundation during rain, when a downspout is completely disconnected at the wall, or when you can see water running behind siding. These situations cause damage with each storm that passes.
